This article contains information about surrogacy destinations in Europe.

SURROGACY DESTINATIONS IN EUROPE

There are two types of surrogacy destinations in Europe:-

  1. European countries that allow commercial surrogacy.
  2. European countries that allow only altruistic surrogacy.

EUROPEAN COUNTRIES THAT ALLOW COMMERCIAL SURROGACY

European countries that allow commercial surrogacy are:-

UKRAINE

Ukraine is a European country where surrogacy is both legally allowed and safe. Under the legislation approved by the Federal level, in Ukraine, surrogacy is well-managed as well as surrogacy agreements are regarded as enforceable.

Due to the affordable costs of the treatment, surrogacy in Ukraine or leihmutterschaft Ukraine is integrating itself as a preferred surrogacy destination. Many intended parents visit this state for a surrogate mother to have a child through the surrogacy process. However, for carrying out surrogacy in Ukraine, the intended parents have to fulfill certain legal requirements to be eligible for this process.

GEORGIA

Georgia regulated surrogacy in 1997 and it stands among that handful number of states which regulate this practice. This is the reason that many International intended parents visit this state to carry out surrogacy. Since 2010, there is a marked increase in the number of surrogacies carried out in Georgia.

The birth certificate of the child does not contain any statement of surrogacy or egg donation. The names of the prospective parents are mentioned on the legal birth certificate as the real parents of the child. Since 2010, there is a marked increase in the number of surrogacies carried out in Georgia.

RUSSIA

Russia is a European surrogacy destination where commercial surrogacy arrangements have been legally permitted since 1995. In Russia, surrogacy and IVF clinics have shown a high success rate. There are outstanding medical facilities provided in the country. In Russia, all the prospective parents are qualified to receive fertility treatments by the aid of Third Party Reproductive Assistance or Assisted Reproduction Technologies. Both sperm and egg donation are allowed in the country but are anonymous.

EUROPEAN COUNTRIES THAT ALLOW ONLY ALTRUISTIC SURROGACY

European countries that allow only altruistic surrogacy are:-

NETHERLANDS

The Netherlands is a European surrogacy destination that permits surrogacy but only in certain circumstances, i.e. the surrogate may be compensated for her expenses, and the intended parents can sign a private contract with someone whom they know, for example, an acquaintance or a relative. They don’t have the legal permission of stating publicly that they are searching for a surrogate.

CANADA

Canada is a European country that permits only altruistic surrogacy which means that the surrogate mother can not be paid for her surrogacy services, as well as the purchase of human eggs and sperms, is also banned. Canadian law also restricts the agencies which match the surrogates with the intended parents. Moreover, the commercial surrogacy services that support the surrogate or the intended parents are also interdicted.

Canada is becoming one of the preferred surrogacy states for the International intended parents. The cost of surrogacy in Canada is affordable which comes from lower surrogate reimbursement and lower fees of surrogacy agencies. Moreover, the child born in Canada is issued Canadian citizenship.

PORTUGAL

Only altruistic forms of surrogacy can be carried out in Portugal and commercial surrogacy is completely banned. Hence, the mother can not obtain any sort of reimbursement for surrogacy. Not even she can receive donations provided by the IPs. Alternatively, the intended parents are allowed to take charges acquired by the medical control of pregnancy.

Moreover, Portugal permits only gestational surrogacy.

GREECE

In Greece, surrogacy arrangements have been legally permitted since 2002. However, in Greece, the surrogacy contracts are under strict set-up.

Even though only altruistic surrogacy is permitted in Greece, the payment of fundamental expenses such as IVF, gestation, and delivery charges are allowed to be paid to the surrogate mothers. Greek clinics offer accurately screened egg donors but the sperm and egg donation is anonymous under the law.

According to Greek law, the child born is provided with the citizenship of IPs rather than Greek citizenship.

CONCLUSION

In a conclusion, it can be said that there are lots of aspects that the intended parents should take into consideration before selecting a surrogate, a surrogacy agency, and a surrogacy destination. Both of the partners should keenly analyze all the advantages and drawbacks of this process. Many European couples are looking for the right surrogacy destination within Europe to carry out surrogacy. Thus, good knowledge about this can save them from legal complications as well as from wasteful expenditure of money.
